Brilliantly hospitable, Jake & The Beans Talk (J&BT) genuinely represents a family who joined forces to fulfil a dream. J&BT is an unpretentious suburban gem and their story continues to evolve meaning both locals and visitors from afar are all welcome at their table.
Although Jake’s name is prominent in the title, it came about as the result of the all-important café naming process (which happened over a glass of red, of course!) But the vision actually started with Mum, Pietrina. She was always a foodie, but it was only once the whole family reached adulthood that their shared passion and individual skills naturally came together, and her foodie dream was finally born in the form of J&BT. Family is the life blood of this business. Think the 1992 US basketball Dream Team and you’ve got it! This lot bring hospitality, business and trade prowess to the table and it’s great. But their warmth is not limited to biology, staff and customers are just as involved and treated as family – it’s easy to be here.
Located just minutes from East Malvern train station, the café is in a little suburban pocket.
Proving the doubters wrong, J&BT has captured the imagination and stomachs of both locals and foodies from afar, and is as much a brunch destination as it is the best half-time coffee stop during the local football season which takes place just over the road. With their Synesso perched proudly on the bench, the silky-smooth barista team deliver moreish cups of Crompton Road and rotating Single Origins, meaning the coffee programme is solid and consistently delicious. Meanwhile a new menu guarantees a satisfied belly whether you indulge in the Snickers French Toast or can’t resist the likes of the Hash Stack with Poached Eggs.
A stunning, brand new courtyard (yes, built by skilled family members) and Marco Batch Brewer are the newest evolutions of this dream. Whether it’s baby blue skies or any of the other seasons you’re likely to expect in a day, these additions accommodate Melbourne’s weather and ensure you’ll be comfortable at the family table
