For the past few years, locals and city sun seekers alike have been enjoying their caffeine fix at Coffee Traders. At both their smaller but perfectly formed Mornington site and the larger sibling in Mt Martha, Chris and Victoria have put their stamp on the Mornington Peninsula cafe scene by focussing on producing the best possible coffee every pour.
A Dark Horse house blend and rotating single origin offering feature at both cafes. Mt Martha has recently added some filter brewing to the equation, with a Clever Coffee Drip set up. Chris is a passionate man when it comes to coffee; in the scant spare time he has as a cafe owner and new father, Chris is also a keen home roaster. This search for the best has also led Chris in the direction of top end espresso machinery, with a 3 group Synesso Hydra at Mornington followed by a 3 group Synesso Sabre at Mt Martha.
Coffee Traders in Mornington is a small, stylish and well-oiled machine. The volume of coffee and amount of freshly made breakfast and lunch offerings produced each day almost defy belief. Each morning, the single origin of the day is written up on boards providing an informed addition to the regular Dark Horse house blend.
Coffee Traders, as the name suggests, also has a broader scope on all things coffee. Home coffee drinkers are catered to with a select line of fresh beans. From lovers of a dark, traditional French roast, to a fruity, light single origin, Coffee Traders has all the bases covered. Chris even has coffee from his home roaster for sale, giving him a further outlet to experiment with specialty coffees. Both cafes offer this range in whole beans or fresh ground to suit any brew method.
It’s a little more relaxed in the Mt Martha store, maybe because of its proximity to the beach — or perhaps just because of its greater size. Mt Martha Coffee Traders makes great use of its space to fill the cabinet and counter top with an ever-changing array of savoury and sweet treats, paired with a Five Senses coffee. The Clever Coffee Drip addition brings perhaps the first specialty pour over offering to the Peninsula, ensuring Coffee Traders continues to lead the way. The upcoming opening up of the front window with bi-folds will further enhance Coffee Traders’ reputation as the place to go for coffee near the beach.
With a ripper summer holiday season in Melbourne this year, the hordes of coffee drinkers on the Peninsula have been well treated.
