Let me preface this by making one thing extremely clear: I LOVE BREAD. I?ve been a patron of the humble corner store bakery for a long time. Growing up in South Australia, I?d quite often do laps of the local footy oval at the tender age of seven, collecting cans and bottles to exchange for real money. The reward? A good, honest chicken and vegetable pie for lunch. So it was a no-brainer for anyone who knows me that I would choose a bakery to review first, even if it meant that my partner, Jess, couldn’t join me. I’m still paying for that one!
From humble beginnings with a single wood-fired oven making sourdough bread for the people of Mount Hawthorn, to a state-of-the-art facility in Malaga supplying Mount Hawthorn, Subiaco and their newest baby inside Claremont Quarters, it’s clear that New Norcia Bakeries have the recipe for success. Their offering is simple and honest. Quality produce is used to bake quality products daily. New Norcia Bakeries and Five Senses Coffee have that in common: we both want to be the absolute best at what we do. It was no surprise therefore to hear that they bake using Bannister Downs milk and cream, and elect to use WA-grown produce for their products as well.
Walking through the brilliantly lit Claremont Quarter, it’s easy to get swept away by their high-end fashion and jewellery offerings. The shopping complex is constantly bustling with people from all walks of life, be it school and university students or affluent business people. So it’s a welcome change of pace to come across New Norcia Bakeries? latest store. Their warm lighting, wooden shelving and wide smiles are a sight for sore eyes for the weary shopper. Their coffee offering is serious as evidenced by the brand new Hydra Synesso with pressure profiling which is powder-coated in super-sexy black. This beast is backed up by 2 Mazzer grinders and a Marco Uber grinder for their cold-brew programme (which is coming soon). Coupled with highly trained staff and Bannister Downs milk, your cup is sure to be memorable. Add a French Choux and a chicken and vegetable pie and you’ve got yourself a seriously great offering.
All of these words and I haven’t even got to their bread yet! Sourdough, no preservatives, baked fresh daily for your tastebuds. Need I say more? There is absolutely no need to buy your fruit loaf or bread from large-chain supermarkets, some of whom have been proven guilty of pre-baking their loaves in Denmark, Germany or Ireland. You know for sure that the bread you’re buying from New Norcia Bakeries was baked in Malaga while you were still tucked up warm in your bed. Seriously though; try their fruit loaf.
