It’s a long drive to the roastery each morning for a few of us north-of-the-river-ites. There’s nothing better than breaking up the routine with a stop at one of our favourite cafes. On a particularly cold morning, we dropped in to The Grind on Hay Street to catch up with the girls and enjoy brekkie and a fantastic coffee.
The team at The Grind are super friendly; they greet us with a smile, and serve up our coffees in gorgeous green and grey cups with mismatching saucers. I’d quite like to pinch a couple for myself! Despite the early hour, the glass case has a large array of tempting food — quiches, paninis, four types of muffins, salads, slices, baguettes and more. The thick-cut bacon, egg and cheese toastie is enormous, with scrambled eggs providing a great twist on the classic. The mango and coconut bread is tempting, but our tummies are full, so we pop that in our bag for later.
A gas heater keeps the outside tables pleasant, even on a chilly winter morning. The large screen telly and bunch of newspapers invites customers to watch or read the morning news while they linger over a cup. With offices upstairs and PMH just up the road, Grind has a steady flow of regulars, who the girls say make their day.
The 3-group Synesso and top-of-the-line Robur E grinder leave no doubt that the Grind on Hay team are passionate about coffee. Their house blend combines beans from Brazil and PNG, and is so good that Ash decides he’ll take this blend home from the roastery on the weekend. High praise indeed!
