We’ve got exciting news for the Adelaide coffee community – the doors to our brand-new Barista Academy are officially open! After a long search we finally found the perfect place for our Adelaide home, ironically, on Melbourne Street in North Adelaide.
Over the last few months the Five Senses team have put a lot of work into creating a beautiful and cozy training space, and kitted it out with all high-end equipment and delicious coffee beans we could fit!
Matt, our Sales and Account Manager in South Australia, has been passionate about setting up a barista academy in Adelaide for a long time:
“A large component of my role at Five Senses is providing barista training for our wholesale customers. Having previously spent most of my life as an educator, gigging musician and life learner, the bonus of being able to guide baristas towards a better version of themselves is something that’s always been a focal point of what I do.”
And while working closely with our National Curriculum Manager to get familiarised with all of our courses, Barista Trainer Erin has also been all hand’s on deck helping Matt bring his SA Barista Academy dream to a reality.
Staffing for hospitality businesses can often be very challenging and as the specialty coffee industry grows, the need for quality-focused, knowledgeable and passionate individuals to manage the front of house and bar service is ever increasing. Offering our cafe partners, and their staff, the opportunity to upskill and hone their coffee craft is something we’re proud of, as it is an essential step in both supporting our industry as well as growing our beloved coffee community.
The current content taught at our Barista Academies in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne is very thorough and demands a good amount of time and attention from the students. Up until now, Erin has been very creative in delivering our training course on-site at cafes, and that can come with challenges. Think running courses after hours, with varying lengths of availability, distractions and tired staff of whom have been on their feet all day!
As we embark on our first year of the South Australian Barista Academy, the aim is to continually grow the frequency and variety of courses we offer, in addition to opening up the space to public cuppings and presentations. All of us at Five Senses are really looking forward to seeing the positive impact our Barista Academy can have on the Adelaide coffee community.
