The word canteen often conjures up an image of a long school lunch line or rows of beige tables and chairs. After visiting the recently revamped Canteen at Trigg Beach, by Kailis, I now associate it with views of beautiful blue ocean, a stylish open space studded with fresh live plants and delicious coffee. And this was before I got my breakfast!

Smashed avocado, Persian feta, dukka, wholemeal sourdough toast. Tuna poke, teriyaki glaze, pickled daikon, edamame, brown rice.

With two black powder coated MVP Synesso’s and a line-up of matching Mazzer grinders, Canteen is well equipped for the beach rush. Working the sophisticated equipment are baristas who certainly know their stuff. They effortlessly produce fast, quality Dark Horse espresso for folks dressed in beach wear, active wear and business suits. If you eat in, you might even spot a well-known local sports player or two munching on the same breakfast as you – I did!

Certainly not your basic beach-side café fare here; their food trays are a great spin on breakfast and lunch. Fresh, well prepared dishes that not only taste amazing, but tick all the boxes visually too. From feta and avocado on toast (with a little dukkah twist!) to hotcakes with blueberry compote, Canteen’s breakfast tray menu has something for everyone. If you are there for lunch, you must try their poke! Originally from Hawaii, Canteen has brought the healthy ceviche-style fish dish to Perth and it is a perfect meal to complement our Aussie oceans.

The experienced owners behind Canteen wanted it to be something different, not just your average beach kiosk, and they have nailed it. With their efficient staff, fresh-look menus, tasty coffee and impeccably designed interior, they’ve worked hard to make the space feel like you could be anywhere in Australia. Just not your old school’s canteen!
